Puerto Vallarta is a city and one of the 125 municipalities in the state of Jalisco , Mexico . The municipality is located in the North Coast Region of the state. It limits to the north with the state of Nayarit, to the south with the municipality of Cabo Corrientes and Talpa de Allende ; to the east withSan Sebastián and Mascota and to the west with the Pacific Ocean .
In 2005 , the municipality had an estimated population of 307,107 people, as well as five million tourists annually. Together with the municipality of BahÃa de Banderas in the state of Nayarit , it forms the Metropolitan Area of Puerto Vallarta , thus being the second most populated of both states.
